Project Overview

This project involved the replacement of the bridge carrying S.R. 4031 (High Street) over Manatawny Creek in the Pottstown Borough, Montgomery County as part of a PennDOT District 6-0 Multi-Bridge Contract. The project site is located in a downtown setting, and the existing bridge consisted of a three-span steel structure, along with an adjacent concrete masonry overflow arch. Hydraulics were critical on this project due to the backwater from the Schuylkill River, immediately downstream, created flooding conditions during heavy storms at the bridge.

The completed bridge consisted of a two-span continuous composite prestressed concrete bulb tee-beam superstructure supported on full height reinforced concrete abutments and a solid shaft pier. The overall span of the new bridge was 156’-6”, comprised of two 78’-3” spans measured from the centerline of the abutment bearings to the centerline of the pier. The bridge was widened to provide two 11’ through lanes, one 11’ left turn lane, and 8’ shoulders/bike lanes, along with two 7’ sidewalks. The final structure provided a waterway opening greater than the existing, eliminating an increase in flood water levels.

Significant coordination with the Borough was necessary to ensure that the aesthetics of the new bridge matched their ongoing downtown revitalization. As a result, the new structure included decorative lighting, along with architectural stone formliner matching nearby Borough landmarks.
