Project Overview

In its role as the traffic engineer for CVS and Wawa, TPD provided transportation planning and engineering services for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Big Road (S.R.0073) and Gravel Pike (S.R.0029).

Initially, TPD provided engineering services for Wawa at the intersection that proposed the realignment of the converging state roads with the installation of a traffic signal. Upon the proposed addition of a CVS pharmacy on another corner of the intersection, TPD analyzed the benefit of a roundabout in lieu of a traditional traffic signal. Through coordination with the Township and PennDOT, the intersection was identified as a candidate for the installation of a roundabout. Further analysis indicated that the roundabout should be installed as a single lane use until future growth and development would require an upgrade to a multilane roundabout. The roundabout currently in operation has been designed to allow for retrofitting at such time as deemed necessary by the Township and PennDOT to include addition approach, departure and circulating lanes with minimal reconstruction.

TPD completed the following tasks for the design of the roundabout:

- Capacity analysis and Traffic Impact Study

- Conceptual design of the roundabout

- Preparation of fully engineered final design plans for the proposed roundabout

- Permitting coordination with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District and Central Offices

- Presentations to the Township Planning Commission and Public
