PROJECT OVERVIEW

TPD is working on several NCDOT-funded planning projects in Western North Carolina communities. These projects are developing multimodal transportation recommendations that are unique to each area and are guided by members of the community, data and existing conditions findings, as well as best practices and guidance in bicycle and pedestrian design. For these projects, TPD possesses the nuance to understand local needs, the passion for safer multimodal communities, the creativity to overcome challenges and the technical knowledge to deliver feasible recommendations.

Town of Fletcher Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan, Town of Fletcher, NC
For Fletcher’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, we seek to answer: Where do people want to go by foot and by bike? How do we connect those places? How do we build the network? And how do we build a bicycle and pedestrian friendly Fletcher? Through community engagement activities, we have heard from hundreds of people and have received over 600 comments on ways to improve the Town for people biking and walking. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the project transitioned to online community engagement and the public is reviewing potential projects for inclusion in the Plan.

Jackson County Pedestrian Plan, Jackson County, NC
Jackson County is unique in that it is a rural county with four municipalities and three non-municipal urban spaces (Cullowhee, Cashiers and the 441 Corridor) where the county maintains sidewalk and directs sidewalk construction with development. This Pedestrian Plan will provide the County with the policy framework and project priorities to build on this momentum and to create and maintain a pedestrian network. This project has just kicked off and will transition to online community engagement in the first phase to continue progress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Asheville Greenway Master Plan, ADA Transition Plan and Pedestrian Master Plan, City of Asheville, NC
The City of Asheville is underway in a project to update the City’s Greenway (G), Accessibility (A), and Pedestrian (P) Plans. The combined Plan, “Close the GAP”, will look to update and expand the network of accessible sidewalks and greenways for the Asheville community. TPD is the lead for this planning effort, and additionally will be reviewing and updating policies and design standards for these transportation elements.
