Church Road Bridge (County Bridge #282) Replacement Project - awards image

The Church Road Bridge (County Bridge #282) over Valley Creek connects Yellow Springs Road to Swedesford Road and acts as a connection to multiple major state roadways, including the PA Turnpike, Route 29, and US 202. Additionally, it connects various residential communities, a church, and multiple business parks. Rurally located, it is adjacent to a historic open space which included trees protected by the Open Lands Conservancy. For this project, TPD provided engineering design services.

S.R. 0581, Sec. 067 over 10th Street Design-Build Accelerated Superstructure Replacement
Lemoyne Borough, Cumberland County, PA

S.R. 0581, Sec. 067 over 10th Street Design-Build Accelerated Superstructure Replacement - award image

The structurally deficient Route 581 Bridge over 10th Street was completely replaced in just four weekends. For this project, TPD worked with contractor J.D. Eckman, Inc. to deliver the project via design-build. The original three-span superstructure was built in 1985 and is a mainline interstate highway bridge.

The heavily-traveled state route filters motorists into and out of Harrisburg and carries approximately 86,000 vehicles per day. Due to its high importance, TPD knew our team had to come up with a solution that would dramatically reduce impacts to the surrounding areas, while continuing to allow traffic to pass to and from the State’s capitol. An accelerated design-build replacement was the only solution we knew would fit the bill. Per Leslie Richards, PennDOT Secretary, this solution ended up “saving motorists roughly a year and a half of full-time traffic disruptions.”

TPD’s structural design services included the design of precast steel beam/concrete deck sections constructed off-site, just a short distance away. These sections were transported and erected into place, and completed with accelerated closure pours and latex modified concrete overlay finishing. Traffic control design included development of directional interstate weekend closures, including detour signage, in-depth community outreach, and development of an incident management plan. This complex accelerated bridge replacement was completed over various weekends in June/July 2015.

Roadway Improvements on Valley Road
Abington Township, Montgomery County, PA

Roadway Improvements on Valley Road - award image

Valley Road provides a link between two important transportation corridors in Eastern Montgomery County – Old York Road and Welsh Road, as well as links between commercial and residential centers and SEPTA’s regional rail service. Prior to the completion of the project, Valley Road provided a three-lane cross-section, including a two-way center turn lane. By performing a “lane diet,” the number of existing lanes were maintained but narrowed in width to provide 5-foot wide bicycle lanes on each side of the roadway. These new lanes now provide safer conditions for bicycle travel and set the stage for future connections and enhancements throughout the Township. While the lane itself is only two (2) miles long, it provides several lessons and has sparked interest in an expanded network. The Abington Township Bicycle Master Plan now proposes more than 47 miles of on-road and off-road bicycle routes through the Township.

Main Street Bridge over S.R. 0033
Palmer Township, Northampton County, PA

Main Street Bridge over S.R. 0033 - award image

The Route 33 Charles Chrin Interchange Project involved construction of a new full-diamond highway interchange, bridge overpass and associated improvements at the existing crossing of PA Rt. 33 and Main Street in the northern end of Palmer Township. The interchange is at the center of an 800-acre site that will be developed as a mixed-use development containing industrial, distribution, office and retail components, known as the Chrin Commerce Centre. The project is a model example of a public-private partnership, representing cooperation and collaboration between a private developer and various levels of government through all stages of the project, from planning to funding to construction. TPD provided construction management and inspection services for this project.
