PROJECT OVERVIEW

TPD performed the construction inspection of the Knowles Avenue Pedestrian Underpass Project in Glenolden Borough, Delaware County.

The project involved the installation of a cast-in-place pedestrian tunnel, 51-feet in length. The structure included cast-in-place wing walls and headwalls which were finished with architectural surface treatment and metal handrails.

The project required a 24-hour continuous tunneling operation for seven days under an active CSX rail line. Through-out the construction, monitoring of the track settlement, vibration, and train flagging were required.

A concrete walkway through the tunnel, excavation, grading, lighting, conduit, and E&S controls were also part of the construction activities. TPD inspected the project with PennDOT’s oversight. The federally-funded, locally-sponsored project was administered through CDS/NextGen and ECMS.
