Villanova Pedestrian Bridge
Radnor Township, Delaware County, PA
TPD provided construction management and inspection services for the construction of the University’s new pedestrian bridge.
The project involved the construction of a seven-segment pedestrian bridge spanning SR 0030 (Lancaster Avenue) from the SEPTA NHSL platform to the core of the campus and St. Thomas of Villanova Church located on the north side of Lancaster Avenue. The bridge segments also contain architectural features, pedestrian-scale lighting, a central pavilion with an elevator and 2 precast staircases. Additional work completed by this project includes adjacent ground-level curb and sidewalk work, utility duct bank installation, sub-surface drainage for the bridge, and other miscellaneous construction. The structure included cast-in-place footings and superstructure deck slabs for Segments 2 through 6, cast in place abutments, pillars and containment wall for Segment 6, and the erection of precast adjacent prestressed box beams over Lancaster Avenue. The exterior and interior precast panels and planks were finished with adhered stone-cladding and topped with cast stone coping caps and/or protective fencing to provide a Victorian-era architectural look that matches the architecture of the campus. Construction of the Segment 4 Elevator Pavilion included doors/frames/hardware, installation of CMU walls, design-build electrical systems, plumbing, mechanical, and elevator.
This project required TPD to coordinate with SEPTA, the design engineer, architect, contractor, and precast concrete supplier. It also required continuous coordination with another general contractor working under a separate contract with Villanova University for two segments of the pedestrian bridge, as well as the adjacent student housing project.
TPD was responsible for the five segments of the project under PennDOT’s oversight, which was the publically-funded, locally-sponsored project administered through PennDOT’s ECMS system (Total Length; ECMS Portion Only = 468.19 LF; From SEPTA Platform to Church Stairs = 615.72 LF).
