PROJECT OVERVIEW

TPD provided Comprehensive Transportation Engineering solutions for this mixed-use development on the 160+ acre former Valley Forge Golf Course site. With the retail and dining amenities of the King of Prussia Town Center consisting of 1,000,000 s.f. of commercial space, 2,000 residential units spread across five residential developments, and the CHOP Specialty Care and Surgery Center, King of Prussia now has the downtown it never had.

Other than Philadelphia, the site is situated at the busiest transportation hub in Pennsylvania adjacent to Route 422, the PA Turnpike, Route 202, the Schuylkill Expressway, and the King of Prussia Mall. Located at the Turnpike interchange with the Schuylkill Expressway, the site sits opposite the busiest toll plaza in the Turnpike system.

TPD was responsible for the preparation of a master plan traffic impact study, alternative access feasibility study, highway design, traffic signal design, and public meeting representation.

As part of the Master Plan, TPD worked with the project team to develop traffic projections for various alternative land uses and analyzed the impact of each alternative at critical locations on the surrounding highway network. Besides identifying necessary and feasible improvements, the goal of this stage was to assist the parties in choosing the appropriate mix of land uses for this Smart Growth, Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND).

Improvements throughout the 17-intersection study area included roadway widening, signalization, utilizing two existing traffic signals for access, updates to two closed-loop traffic signal systems, full reconstruction of a state roadway, and the redesign of the N. Gulph Road interchange with I-76 adjacent to the tollbooths for the Valley Forge exit of the PA Turnpike. Throughout the design of roadway improvements, TPD’s Highway Design Team worked closely with the Planning Team to design 2.5 miles of perimeter roadways and access points.  Part of the ATMS developed by TPD for this project included one of the first traffic adaptive traffic signal systems in Pennsylvania.

The improvements implemented above prevent queues from extending into the PA Turnpike Toll Plaza from the new signalized intersection of the realigned I-76 ramps and N. Gulph Road.  As part of this project, the existing I-76 ramps were realigned to create a signalized intersection at N. Gulph Road and the newly constructed Village Drive.  In order to prevent queues from impacting operations of the Toll Plaza, queue detectors were added to the I-76 ramps that trigger a southbound green phase, allowing the queues to clear out, thereby eliminating the possibility of queuing issues at/near the Toll Plaza.
