PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Route 100 Multimodal Trail connects the Exton Train Station to the Chester Valley Trail and allows for safe passageway for both pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The project primarily consisted of the construction of a 2,500’ multi-use path along the west side of Pottstown Pike (Route 100) from the Exton Train Station to the Chester Valley Trail (Commerce Drive) along with the necessary modification and/or installation of pedestrian components to existing traffic signals. Work also included construction of ADA complaint curb ramps, crosswalks, design-build pedestrian lighting, drainage modifications, modification/reconstruction of traffic islands, signing & striping, and site restoration. A key part of this project included improvements to the Chester Valley Trail crossing of Route 100 at Commerce Drive. The new crosswalk allows pedestrians to safely cross the busy Route 100 via one crosswalk, rather than the three previous crosswalks.

This section is part of the larger trail network spanning throughout the county. It has become increasingly important to connect the county’s main trail arteries, such as the Chester Valley Trail, to where people live, shop, work, and link up with mass transit for ease of use. This project is an excellent example of building those critical tributaries. This side path safely stitches together at least six ‘low-stress islands’ that pedestrians and bicyclists would otherwise have to navigate and will dramatically improve access to the Chester Valley Trail.

The project was completed in two phases, with Phase 1 being from the Exton Train Station to Bartlett Avenue and Phase 2 completed the link from Bartlett Avenue to the Chester Valley Trail.

Funding for the trail was provided by a Pennsylvanian Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) multi-modal grant, developer contributions and the West Whiteland Township transportation fund.

In addition to performing the design work related to the above, TPD also performed Construction Inspection services for this project, as well as another adjacent $400,000 job designed in conjunction with this project.
