PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is proposing the construction of a 13.3-mile project that would extend the Southern Beltway system south and east from the Turnpike 576 terminus at U.S. Route 22 in Robinson Township, Washington County to a new interchange with Interstate 79 at the Allegheny-Washington County line near the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. The U.S. Route 22 to Interstate 79 Southern Beltway Project is needed to provide transportation mobility and safety improvements, and to serve future development plans in the corridor south and west of the City of Pittsburgh. The U.S. Route 22 to Interstate 79 Southern Beltway Project would improve access for employment, industry, truck traffic, emergency services, and future growth areas by providing a modern transportation facility that enhances transportation continuity locally and regionally.

TPD is a subconsultant on a project team lead by Greenhorn & O’Mara, Inc. providing preliminary engineering for Section 55B (green on above insert) of the U.S. Route 22 to I-79 section of the Southern Beltway. Section 55B extends from S.R. 4012 to east of the mainline toll plaza. TPD’s engineering design tasks have been associated with the relocation and realignment of side roads next to the proposed mainline such as Laurel Hill Road and Reissing Road. TPD has been responsible for the following tasks as part of this work:

- Typical Sections

- Line and Grade

- Drainage Design

- Preliminary Right-of-Way Impacts

- Traffic Control Plans

- Pavement Marking and Signing Plans

- Construction Cost Estimates

- Safety Review Submission

- Design Field View Submission
