PROJECT OVERVIEW
TPD was selected as Prime Consultant by the PennDOT District 6-0 for this intersection improvement project at Jacksonville Road, Old Jacksonville Road and Almshouse Road in Northampton Township, PA.
The intersection currently experiences significant congestion during the AM, midday and PM peak hour resulting in queues in excess of 700’ in each direction. In addition, three watercourses cross underneath Almshouse Road and Jacksonville Road. During heavy rainfall events, the storm pipe capacity is exceeded resulting in significant flooding of the intersection and some of the adjacent residential properties.
Adjacent conditions are somewhat challenging. There is a potentially historic farm and school house located within the project limits, as well as a stone retaining wall supporting the road adjacent to waterway. Additionally, there are wetlands located on the southwest corner of the intersection owned by the Township.
The TPD team developed conceptual designs for a signalized intersection and roundabout as part of the Alternatives Analysis. TPD will be advancing through preliminary engineering and final design phases.
