PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project involved the replacement of a 138’ long, narrow substandard one-lane bridge and the realignment of the approach roadway to eliminate a 90° bend in the road at one end of the bridge. Originally built in 1937, the existing bridge was a two-span rolled steel I-beam structure with a single 12’ lane.

To improve the alignment of the roadway, it was realigned to the north of the existing bridge, on a 48° skew to the Stonycreek River, with horizontal curves meeting current design criteria introduced at each approach to the bridge. To span the river at the 48° skew, TPD designed a new 193’ long, two-span steel I girder bridge with reinforced concrete abutments and pier.

Stonycreek River is a popular river for recreation by whitewater canoeists, kayakers and others. Recognizing this, TPD designed the construction sequence, Erosion and Sediment Pollution Control Plan, and Aids to Navigation (ATON) Plan to maintain safe river traffic during construction. We also incorporated a stream water level gage into the concrete forming of the pier to assist boaters. In addition, simulated stone masonry architectural surface treatments were provided on the concrete substructure to enhance the appearance of the bridge.

TPD provided the following services to PennDOT District 9-0:
