PROJECT OVERVIEW
With a grant from the Greater Hickory Metropolitan Planning Organization and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the City of Hickory moved forward with a plan to construct a multi-use trail and make streetscape improvements along Old Lenoir Road, also known as Old Lenoir Walk.
The multi-use trail is being constructed by way of a road diet, where the road is being converted from 4-lanes to 3-lanes. The trail is being constructed partially within the current roadway to minimize impacts to homes and businesses. The project includes railroad considerations and complex at-grade trail crossings.
In addition to the new trail, several small parks will be built along the trail, to serve as rest stops along the way and as trailheads for trail patrons to gather and relax along the route.
As a subconsultant, TPD is leading on the following tasks:
- Community and stakeholder engagement
- Graphics
- Traffic analyses
- Intersection and safety analyses
- Crossing evaluation
- Landscape architecture concept design
- Corridor simulations
- Signal design
- Cost estimating
The trail, along with the City’s culture of providing an atmosphere for dynamic growth and robust development, will be a major asset in the community’s effort to craft a strong economy, provide good jobs, and create a desirable quality of life for all residents.
