PROJECT OVERVIEW

TPD was a subconsultant on this project, to address pedestrian connectivity and enhancements for the US 19 Corridor in Cherokee, NC. The evaluation of pedestrian crossings in this half-mile stretch was needed after a number of pedestrians were involved in crashes trying to access the Casino and related attractions on the northside of US 19, while the southside of the corridor provides parking, accommodations and dining. TPD’s specialized skillset in designing uncontrolled midblock pedestrian crossings proved very helpful on this necessary project.

TPD’s tasks included:

– Existing conditions assessment and US 19 Design widening Design Plan review

– Site observations of signal operations, pedestrian movements, ADA compliance and vehicle flows

– Future growth considerations to accommodate Casino and Convention Center Expansion Plans

– Pedestrian origin and destination evaluation

– Identification of crossing locations (7 locations advanced to design)

– Uncontrolled crossing treatment selection

– Decorative crosswalk selection and design

– Signal modifications

– Concept Plans

– Cost estimates

– Final report prep and presentations to Cherokee DOT and NCDOT

– Pavement Marking and Signal Design Plan sets

The project planning report was approved in September of 2019. This moved to an accelerated design phase, which was completed in less than 2 months.
